We use a range of Coloured pencils to create our portraits. Each one has different qualities, and give different effects depending on what you are trying to achieve.
Faber Castell Polychromos
These are artist grade oil based coloured pencils. They have a harder lead than other brands, so don’t need sharpening quite so much. This harder lead makes them perfect for those top layers of fur as you get a lovely sharpe line. They are break resistant, waterproof and non smudge…and most importantly, they are light fast. Which means that they will not fade over time. So your portrait will last, without the colours being effected as they age. There are 120 colours in this set.
Caran D’Ache Luminance
These are high end oil based coloured pencils, manufactured by Caran D’Ache specifically with coloured pencil professional artists in mind. The leads are lightfast and are intended for use in exhibition, collection and museum purposes. These are permanent and creamy in texture, and have a high pigment concentration giving a very intense bright colour. They are a fair bit softer than the Polychromos, which make them perfect for base layers. You can layer and layer these pencils and they will still give a perfect finish! There are 76 colours in this set.
Caran D’Ache Pablos
These are artist grade wax based pencils (although, they feel much more like oil based!), manufactured by Caran D’Ache specifically with realistic drawing in mind. The lead is fairly hard compared to the luminance, and they have incredible coverage. Even the lighter colours are opaque enough to be seen over the darker tones, making them perfect for going back in on portraits and bringing back out those highlights that may have been lost along the way. There are 120 colours in this set.
